General Erwin Rommel (1891 - 1944), the "Desert Fox" photo taken ca 1941

Feared by the allies until he met his match in British General Bernard Montgomery on the North African front colorized here.  General Rommel was among those charge in the last conspiracy on the failed assassination attempt on Hitler, 20 July 1944.  But due his popularity with the German people, he was asked to commit suicide on 14 Oct 1944, taking a cyanide pill.
