A five-star general in the US Army (one of 4 in 1944, including Douglas MacArthur, George C. Marshal, and Omar Bradley) and served as supreme commander of the Allied Expeditionary Forces in Europe, and responsible for the planning and execution of invasion of North Africa in Operation Torch in 1942–43 and the successful invasion of France and Germany in 1944–45 from the Western Front. With the discovery of Nazi concentration camps, he ordered camera crews to document evidence of the atrocities of the German high command for use in the Nuremberg Trials. He reclassified German prisoners of war (POWs) in U.S. custody as Disarmed Enemy Forces (DEFs), who were no longer subject to the Geneva Convention. A Republican, he won two terms as president from 1953 to 1961
