Ansel Adams: JeffreyPine tree at Yosemite Park

This was my first colorization of an Ansel Adams photo - his 1940 print of the famous Jeffrey Pine tree on Sentinel Dome at Yosemite Park that has been photographed by countless photo enthusiasts and tourists over the years, A clear specimen of the artistry of nature shaping an already beautiful tree. Sadly, this Yosemite landmark tree no longer exists. The tree died in a prolonged California drought in 1976 /77 but survived as a leafless stump for almost 30 more years before it finally fell in 2003.

Here's my colorized take on the famous Yosemite valley right after a winter storm. The trees were not as lush as his earlier shot on the same subject taken at the height of summer . I consider this more dramatic for the low cloud formation

Putting colors back to nature

It is said that color is the language of nature. So with all due respect to great B&W photographers like Ansel Adams and John Setton, among others, who produced some of the loveliest nature shots in monochrome, I am attempting to bring back the ciolors to what they must have seen with their eyes prior clicking the camera shutter button. 

Here is my colorized Ansel Adams photo of his 1942 print of a Driftwood from the Mural Project 1941-1942, Jackson Lake and Teton Range in background. 

Ansel Adams photos are so well detailed that they lend themselves nicely to colorization. Kodachrome color film was already widely used during his time but accdg to his son Michael, he confessed he did not have the control he needed to really capture the colors of reality as he saw it. Despite taking over 3,500 color photos, Ansel considered color photography as still immature. B&W films gave him more control and accdg to his son, Ansel would have loved using post-production Adobe Photoshop to correct colors, contrast and other elements in a color photo. That would be in the province of colorization as well. AA died in 1984 when digital photography was yet unheard of.

Colorized a vintage photo of Queen Elizabeth II in one of her post-coronation photo sessions in 1953. The Imperial State Crown she wore was priceless, but is now valued at over $1 Billion. The 317.3 carat Cullinan II diamond called Star of Africa is mounted on the crown. The larger Cullinan I at 504 carats is set on the scepter (not shown). Above the Cullinan is a 170 carat irregular cut ruby called Black Prince's Ruby. The coronation necklace has 25 diamonds, ranging from 8-12 carats with the 22-carat Lahore diamond as pendant.

Here'my colorized take of a photo of a young Edith Nakpil (1935 - 2009), taken ca 1956,wearing an original 'Salvacion Lim-Higgins' creation. She bagged the title of 1956 Miss Philippines. became the First Lady of Davao as the wife of Gov. Francisco Rabat.and eventually served as assemblywoman of the defunct Batasang Pambansa under President Marcos. She was among the Blue Ladies of Imelda Marcos, herself a title holder of Rose of Tacloban, and 1952 Muse of Manila under then Mayor Lacson.

The Philippines is steeped in a tradition of beauty queens turned politcos. Edith Nakpil, Imelda Romulados and Maria Kalaw Katigbak who was a 1931 Carnival Queen turned Senator. Then there was Rosemari "Baby"Arenas, former Pearl of the Orient, became a socialite with power connections due to her alleged romantic involvement with President Ramos.

A Filipina beauty possibly taken by Francisco van Camp, a Dutch photographer who became famous in the late 19th century for taking studio shots of rich families of illustrators in what was then considered a new art medium. No more posing for hours before an artist painting their portraits on a canvas

With extensive liberties i compositing a different background image from standard photo stocks, colorized a Filipina aristocrat beauty , ca 1890s. Along with the pañuelo or kerchief, fan, and the parasol )day-umbrella), the baro't saya  of the Spanish era are favorite fashion wear ethnic wear among Philippine social ladies all the way to the American era when posing before the camera.

Another colorized vintage portrait of a Filipina, This time a Chinese-Filipina, taken by Francisco van Camp, ca 1890s. Entitled Niña Mestiza China, siglo XIX, this was downloaded from Flikr and is is part of the photographic archives of the Museo National de Antropologia, Madrid Spain. No story behind the photo, other than the fact that the subject was relatively fair-skinned wearing the traditional baro't saya that have become standard wear for women being photographed in studios from the 1840s to the early 1900s.

Dutch Photographer Francis van Camp is considered one of the pioneers of Phillipine Photography at around the time that national historic artist Juan Luna took up the hobby in Europe under the mentorship of various European photographers.

It's interesting to note that the Dutch actually attempted to colonize the Philippines and wrest it from Spain in 1646, during the 80 Years' War in Europe (1568 to 1648) but failed in the spectacular series of see battles of La Naval de Manila (148 - 1652) attributed to the intercession of the Virgin Mary in a war that was essentially between Catholic Spain/Philippines and Dutch Protestants

Doncella India, Philippines girl with Indian blood ca 1870/80

Colorized a vintage photo of a young Filipina taken ca 1870-80 from the Biblioteca Nacional de España where its Hispanic Digital Library contains the Philippine Album Publication,with 17 portraits and 43 views of Manila and surroundings. Not much story behind the photo but it has excellent photo resolution that makes it a joy to colorize.

The photo is entitled Doncella India, which transliterates to Indian Maid but depicts a Filipina. This young girl could have Indian blood. It is a well known fact that in 1762 the British invaded Manila and had control of the city for several years. They brought with them many Indian soldiers or Sepoys (Indian infantryman employed by the armies of the British East India Company from 1700 to 1857) who didn’t want to fight so they ran off to the hills east of Manila and hid out until the British left Manila. That is one reason why there is a lot of Indian blood in Filipinos even until today.

There have been comments on this picture that the young girl is dressed indecent for the period, considering that the women of the time wore the Philippine traditional baro't saya when photographed in a studio. There is no known history behind the photo and it is possible for young ladies (teenagers) at the time to dress less formally given the tropic clime.

Colorized with a lot of liberties, a few photos of a young Ingrid Bergman just starting out in Hollywood at around the time she made Intermezzo (1939), the award-winning classic Casablanca (1942) opposite Humphrey Bogart, her notable performances in For Whom the Bell Tolls (1943), and in Gaslight (1944)
